Earthquakes in Mesoamerica
The countries of Central America are located in a seismically active region. Tectonic pressures from the conjunction of five plates result in numerous earthquakes and active volcanoes. Honduras, El Salvador, and Nicaragua ride atop the Caribbean plate which bisects Costa Rica to the south and Guatemala to the north. Portions of Costa Rica and all of Panama are located on the Panama plate which adjoins the South American plate to the south. Mexico, Belize, and most of Guatemala sit atop the North American plate. To the West, just off the coastal shelf in the Pacific, the cocos plate is slowly sliding eastward beneath all these plates creating volcanoes and triggering earthquakes. Earthquakes of magnitude 5 and above since 1900 are shown by the red and green circles on the figure at right. Volcanoes - active and dormant - are shown by yellow triangles.
