Floods in Mesoamerica

Heavy rainfalls, a high density of surface water bodies, and, in some cases, poor infrastructure make flooding a serious perennial hazard in Central America. SERVIR and collaborators provide several products for both monitoring existing floods and analyzing historical events.

The Dartmouth Flood Observatory (DFO) is using the AMSR-E microwave measurements to measure discharge and watershed runoff every 2 days from 25 river reach sites in Central America. SERVIR publishes this data in a web-map service that automatically updates as new flood data is received (about once every two days). Click here to view the latest flood map.

Click on the flood symbols to view detailed maps and reports regarding flooding along that reach. This map is also available as a framework layer in SERVIR-VIZ. Visit the DFO home page for more information on how the data is produced and to view similar reports from around the world on the global Surface Water Watch.

Search the SERVIR Data Portal for the keyword "Floods" to download DFO's historical archive of Central America floods, or download the same product as a PDF on this page. Other historical products of interest include analyses of post Hurricane Stan floods in Guatemala and El Salvador, and the Panama City floods that occurred September 17-18, 2004.
