Red Tides in Mesoamerica
Harmful algal blooms that occur in the ocean, commonly known as "Red Tides," can make shellfish and other economically important marine life toxic to eat.
The SERVIR team used MODIS Ocean Color data products to enhance current Red-Tide detection systems by providing a higher degree of prediction of the location, direction, and extent of red tides. MODIS Ocean Color data products detect chlorophyll in marine environment and serve as likely indication of red tides.
The products are produced twice a day and are used by the El Salvadoran and Guatemalan governments to alert their tourism and fishing industries of potential red tide events. This has enabled these countries to save millions of dollars for their industries.
