Observation/Prediction for Mesoamerica

The NASA Ames Ecological Forecasting group, in support of SERVIR, is providing a suite of Ecosystem Nowcasts and Forecasts known as the TOPS-30. TOPS is a modeling software system that brings together technologies in information science, weather/climate forecasting, ecosystem modeling, and satellite remote sensing to enhance management decisions related to floods, droughts, forest fires, human health, crop, range, and forest production.

TOPS Mesoamerican products include 8- and 16-day forecasts for 6 different variables (see TOPS products table below). TOPS "hindcasts" are also available starting from the year 2000. Click here for more information about TOPS and the NASA AMES Ecological forecasting group. Click on the Realtime Image Viewer link to view and animate the TOPS forecasts. Search the SERVIR Data Portal for the keyword "TOPS" to access detailed metadata on the individual products and instructions on how to download and import the files to use with GIS applications.

TOPS Variable Frequency
of Output
Description
Leaf Area Index (LAI)
Jan. 2006 - Current
8-days Leaf Area Index is leaf area/ground area and an important property of the plant canopy. Data are output every 8 days at 1km resolution
Land Surface Temperature (LST)
Feb. 26, 2006 - Current
8 days Land Surface Temperature provides per-pixel daytime temperature values (measured in degrees Kelvin).
Normalized Difference Vegetative Index (NDVI)
Feb. 2 - Mar. 22, 2006
16-days Normalized Difference Vegetative Index (NDVI) is a measure of vegetative cover based on reflectance.
Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI)
Feb. 2 - Mar. 22, 2006
16-days The Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI) is an improvement on NDVI--corrects some reflected light distortions and not as easily saturated as NDVI.
Fraction of absorbed Photosynthetically Active Radiation (FPAR) Gross Primary
Jan. 2006 - Current
8 days FPAR measures available radiation in photosynthetically active wavelengths absorbed by the canopy.
Gross Primary Productivity (GPP)
Feb. 26 - Jul. 26, 2006
8 days Gross Primary Productivity (GPP) is the total amount of light energy converted to plant biomass.
