Skyline Mesoamerica 3-D
Fly interactively over Central America on-line. A complete, 15 meter resolution, 3-D mosaic of Central America - created from Landsat and IKONOS imagery and elevation data from the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission - is available, and you can fly over it. You control the altitude, direction of flight and the location. You may also fly to preset locations such as the ruins of the ancient Maya city of Tikal or the coral reefs of Belize. Just follow the steps below.
STEP ONE: Install the free TerraExplorer Viewer (2MB) from Skyline Software Corporation.
Once the download dialog box opens, save the file 'setup.exe' to your disk and then double click on it to install. (Note: TerraExplorer only runs on Windows operating systems, not Macintosh or Unix.)
STEP TWO: Click here to connect to Central America 3-D. The viewer will open and you can begin. If you need help navigating in the viewer click on the help tab. (NOTE: It's best to use the Internet Explorer web browser to access the 3-D fly file. Other browsers may not recognize the format and will prompt you to save the file to your disk. If this happens you will need to open the fly file from the TerraExplorer viewer File Menu.)
A broadband Internet connection is desirable to use this visualization.
Thanks to Matt Nolan and The University of Alaska Fairbanks for hosting the 3-D files and for providing the server. To see Terra Explorer visualizations from other places around the world, visit EarthSLOT.
